The film Centurion will be in theaters in the fall this year, giving the Roman Centurion Costumes the chance of more visibility than is normally the case. The characters of the Roman Empire are both intriguing and well known, and the easily recognizable features of those people makes it enjoyable when dressing up.

Even though there is more creativity possible when dressing up as a Gladiator, and a sheet and laurel wreath portray the instantly recognizable countenance of a Roman Senator, the true heroes of the era were the Centurions of Rome’s legendary army. Rome’s Legions created the well known Pax Romana extending from Persia to Britain, and even though the bureaucracy of the Roman Empire kept everything going smoothly, it was still the Legions that maintained its power.

There are four main parts to making the costume look realistic. The first is the clothes, which includes the chest piece and knee length tunic. The instantly identifiable helmet with its feathers is essential. Since one has to look the part from top to bottom, the distinctive Roman sandals are needed. Finally, the sword and the shield. To give authenticity they should be the Roman short sword, or Gladius, and a Scutum, or small round shield.

The costume can be made unique with further improvements like a cape, additional weapons, greaves to protect the shins, and bracelets. A javelin could also be carried around, but that would probably be a bit much.

This makes an excellent choice as one part of a couple’s costume also. With the man dressing as the Centurion, his partner has a choice of dressing up as one of the stylish Roman ladies or as one of the uncontrollable barbarians contesting the Romans.
